I shall always be grateful that my first proof of the healing...
I shall always be grateful that my first proof of the healing power of Christian Science came to me before I believed in its healing power. I had been suffering for weeks from what dentists call a pulp stone. Regular weekly visits had been made to the dentist for about six weeks, but it was quite impossible for me to stand the pain when he worked, and equally impossible for the dentist to do the work with any satisfaction to himself.
Finally, after many weeks of this unprofitable way of doing things, the dentist, who was not a Christian Scientist, told me that I would have to get some "outside courage" in order to finish the work. I did not know what he meant by "outside courage" until he told me of Christian Science. He said he had done work for a lady while a practitioner helped her. "And I tell you it did not hurt her," he said. I reluctantly asked a Christian Science practitioner to treat me. The practitioner asked me to read some lines in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I consented to do this, although I felt a little as Naaman felt when the prophet told him to "go and wash in Jordan seven times."
However, politeness and honesty bade me follow the request of the one whom I had asked for help, and I read what was given me to read. The day came when the appointment at the dentist's, for a final effort to finish the work, was to be made. The practitioner telephoned me that I would not need anyone to go with me, that I would be all right by myself. My heart sank a little at this, for I had a great fear that the pain I had endured so many times would be inflicted upon me again. However, as my pride was too stiff to allow of my asking the practitioner to accompany me, I simply agreed, and went again to the dentist, expecting the worst. I never shall forget my surprise at not being hurt. The dentist worked for an hour and a half, and beyond the slight jarring occasioned by his exertions, there was no sensation experienced, and the work was finished.
