About five years ago I read in the New York Times an editorial on Christian Science which so impressed me that instead of putting the paper on the library table I took it with me and read the editorial again. Then I asked a friend if he knew anything about Christian Science. He said he had a niece who was a Scientist, and also gave me the names of some others who were interested. I talked with them on the subject, and they gave me pamphlets on Christian Science. I then procured "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and read it together with the Bible, the Journal, Sentinel, and Monitor every day. I feel more and more that this reading is the cause of my happiness.
Thirteen years ago I had to give up my work on account of pains in my legs and back; but now I am free from pain, which I have not been heretofore for the past thirty years. The more I read the more I say, God bless Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, for the light she has thrown on the Bible. It is with a heart full of love and gratitude to God, to Christ Jesus, and to our Leader that I give this testimony, hoping that it will be of benefit to some one along the way. I can truthfully say that during my seventy-nine years I have not felt so happy as I do now, even though from my early boyhood days I had read the Bible and prayed to God night and morning. I am indeed grateful for what little knowledge I have of Christian Science—worshiping not at the call of a bell, but at the call of my soul; singing not to the baton's sway, but to the rhythm in my heart; loving because I must, knowing the joy of it.
William G. Dodd, Bedford, Virginia.
