God's Thoughts

IN her writings Mrs. Eddy makes particularly clear the distinction between God's thoughts and the thoughts of mortals. On page 337 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" she writes: "Eternal things (verities) are God's thoughts as they exist in the spiritual realm of the real. Temporal things are the thoughts of mortals and are the unreal, being the opposite of the spiritual or the spiritual and eternal." The distinction is scientific, and is based on accurate understanding of God. It is this spiritual understanding which enables one to apprehend the status of immortal being and to distinguish it from the false belief of mortal existence.

Christian Science teaches that God is Mind,—infinite Mind. As this is apprehended, the nature of God's thoughts is discerned; for Mind is expressed in ideas; and the ideas of Mind are therefore the thoughts of God. The Christian Scientist never ceases to marvel at the fact that Christian Science has revealed so clearly and simply the nature of God's thoughts as spiritual ideas. The revelation has wiped away the difficulties he had in apprehending Deity, and is showing him that God is ever present,—ever at hand,—and that His infinite power is ever available.

How does the power of God become available? This is answered by Christian Science, which, while it gives an understanding of God, also enlightens us on the nature of man and man's relationship to God. Since God is infinite Mind, and since He is expressed in thoughts or ideas, man must be the idea of God. Immediately this is seen, the complete unity of God and man is recognized. This union is indissoluble; it cannot be broken; it must always have existed and will always continue to exist, because Mind and its idea are inseparable. And man is the compound idea of God,—the compound idea, including all lesser ideas. Hence, when any lesser idea is understood, it can be said, that one is knowing something of man.
