There are no absurdities in Christian Science; and many...
Progress Magazine
There are no absurdities in Christian Science; and many of the prevalent misconceptions of its teachings are due simply to a misunderstanding of the sense in which the word "Mind" is used. On page 311 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy says: "What we term mortal mind or carnal mind, dependent on matter for manifestation, is not Mind. God is Mind." The Apostle Paul said this human or carnal mind was "enmity against God," thus clearly differentiating between the erroneous, discordant beliefs and opinions of the human mind and the perfect spiritual ideas of the divine Mind. This carnal mind being the source of the evil suggestions which produce disease and discord, one naturally would not look to this mind for relief from its own inharmonious thought; and it is evident that health and happiness should be sought elsewhere. Christian Science therefore does not attempt to "harness" the human mind with the aid of suggestion or autosuggestion; neither does it employ a "blind and unquestioning faith" in God in order to heal sin and disease. On the contrary, it teaches that we must be transformed by the renewing of the mind, and must let that Mind be in us "which was also in Christ Jesus." It explains how "the divine Mind makes perfect, acts upon the so-called human mind through truth, leads the human mind to relinquish all error, to find the divine Mind to be the only Mind, and the healer of sin, disease, death" (Science and Health, p. 251).
Christian Science does not rely upon a blind "faith in Biblical promises, tranquil surroundings, and reiterated assurances from the attendants" as "powerful suggestions, by which ills of the worst physical kind are cured." Many have been healed through Christian Science treatment who had previously lost all faith in God and in the Biblical promises; while it is not an uncommon occurrence for persons to be healed while living in the midst of most unpleasant surroundings and associating daily with people antagonistic to Christian Science. Jesus and his disciples performed some of their most remarkable healing works in the presence of the scornful Pharisees; and to-day students of Christian Science are proving, according to the measure of their understanding, that the spiritual ideas emanating from the divine Mind are potent to overcome the evil suggestions of the human mind, thus healing in a Christlike, scientific manner all forms of disease, fear, ignorance, and sin.
