Recently there came to me an experience which demonstrated the practical help of Christian Science in everyday affairs; and the thought also came that I could write a testimony for the periodicals, and so give a little in return for the much I have received. The experience was the overcoming of fear in learning to drive an automobile. I did not wish to drive a car, beause traffic in Honolulu has become quite heavy and the thought of taking a car into it frightened me. The first step in the healing of my fear was the overcoming of my dread of the examination. I had heard tales of how difficult the examiners made it, and how confused one became even when one knew how to drive. The next step was the overcoming of the fear of traffic. At first when I got into a crowd of cars my thought would become blank and I would have to be told what to do. In doing my mental work the thought came to me that as God's idea I actively reflected intelligence, and that fear had no power to paralyze intelligent action; and so the last obstruction was overcome. When I took my examination, I am happy to say I was without nervousness; and I got my license without any difficulty. And now driving is not the trial I had thought it would be, but a pleasure.

For many years I have had great good from the teachings of Christian Science. Whereas I used to be a slave to fear, at the mercy of temperament, and far from well and strong, now I find myself increasingly free from both fear and the many moods of the human mind, and am well and strong. When I think, too, of the years of preparation which our dear Leader, Mrs. Eddy, went through in order to receive this truth, the many years of unremitting labor, and the misunderstanding and misrepresentation she endured in order to show us the path to health and happiness, I long to express my gratitude in the way that is so simply pointed out to us in the Foreword to "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. vii): "Deeds, not words, are the sound test of love; and the helpfulness of consistent and constant right thinking—intelligent thinking untainted by the emotionalism which is largely self-glorification—is a reasonable service which all Christian Scientists can render their Leader."
