It is with a deep sense of gratitude to Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, and to the God of love which this Science reveals, that I offer this testimony of its healing power. I began the study of Christian Science nine years ago after attending church a few times with a sister who was interested. Very soon the proofs of its truth and healing power began coming to me through demonstration.

During the year 1918 I served as a messenger with the American Expeditionary Forces in France and had many opportunities to see the protection which came from dwelling "in the secret place of the most High." At one time, when an enemy plane came over our line and began machine-gun fire, I was lying upon my back. The order was for every one to remain motionless, but a voice within me seemed to urge that I sit up, and I did so. In the very moment that I swung my body forward to a sitting position the thump of a bullet was heard. One of the boys dug it out of the ground later. It was in such a position as to prove that had I not moved it would have passed through my chest. This is one of many such experiences.

Near the end of September, 1918, I was struck in the left arm by a piece of shell which passed completely through. Under the army doctor's care I was held in the hospital over eight months. During this time I was thankful to Christian Science for the absence of any sense of pain whatsoever. Doctors and nurses were incredulous when they found that nothing they did to me ever hurt me. Christian Science had no chance to heal the wound, for as soon as it started to heal the doctors would break it open again, trying to straighten my arm, declaring that if the wound healed before my arm was straight the arm never would straighten. Finally I asked for a discharge from the army so that I might have Christian Science treatment unhampered by materia medica. This discharge was granted. The wound was still open, and the arm was bent at about forty-five degrees. Under Christian Science treatment alone the wound was healed in less than two weeks, and then the arm began to straighten out. In a couple of months it was perfectly straight, and I have had no bad effects from the experience.
