Christian Scientists note with gratitude and rejoicing the awakening interest in and appreciation of healing by prayer in some of the other Christian churches. One of the sure evidences of the realization of the great human need for such healing, and of the efficacy of Christian Science in meeting this need, is the fact that such efforts are classified as Christian Science when method and means of work are quite different. Christian Science practice is, as the name implies and indicates, simply the application of the scientific or exact, provable rules of Christianity, which were discerned, declared, and demonstrated by Christ Jesus and his disciples. The Master referred to this scientific knowledge of God and His laws of harmony, health, and holiness when he said: "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." That glorious promise is being fulfilled to-day by Christian Science, for by means of its spiritual ministrations those in bondage to sickness and sin are enabled to realize their God-given heritage of freedom, harmony, strength, purity, and peace. Thus, it may readily be seen that Christian Science does not operate by means of appeals to blind faith, religious emotionalism, autosuggestion, or any of the etceteras of psychotherapy. Writing on page 12 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy makes this plain in these words: "'The prayer of faith shall save the sick,' says the Scripture. What is this healing prayer? A mere request that God will heal the sick has no power to gain more of the divine presence than is always at hand. The beneficial effect of such prayer for the sick is on the human mind, making it act more powerfully on the body through a blind faith in God. This, however, is one belief casting out another,—a belief in the unknown casting out a belief in sickness. It is neither Science nor Truth which acts through blind belief, nor is it the human understanding of the divine healing Principle as manifested in Jesus, whose humble prayers were deep and conscientious protests of Truth,—of man's likeness to God and of man's unity with Truth and Love."
