The Real versus the Unreal

NOWHERE is the real defined so perfectly as in Christian Science. Consequently, it is through Christian Science that the unreal is most efficiently uncovered and shown to be nothing. Indeed, Christian Science, perceiving the truths of Being,—those truths which are the direct manifestations of God,—alone is able to distinguish between the real and the unreal, between eternal verities and temporal falsities. It has cleared the atmosphere of human speculative philosophy, and has swept away all doubts as to what constitutes absolute Truth. The result is that to-day mankind was never in a better position to learn of the real; and having learned, to discard the unreal.

Throughout all generations men have sensed, whether they may have styled themselves religious or not, that earthly existence is largely made up of the unreal. They have seen the grass spring up, come to fruition, and then wither away. They have seen the flowers bloom, season after season, delighting the physical senses for a little while, but not one of them have they found to endure; all have appeared as in a dream; all have vanished as in a dream. And the works of men themselves, what of them? A few generations is the length of the life of most of these works. Everything material is known by all to have but a brief existence, appearing and vanishing like a shadow.

But while men have been aware of the fleeting nature of material things, many have sensed, even amid the temporal, the real and eternal universe of Spirit. And it is this which has sustained the human race in its long and often arduous journey towards God, the divine Being, in whom all reality forever abides. For spiritual sense, the sense which first of all whispers of spiritual Truth to the listening ear and then definitely reveals it, is nothing else than the mode of the self-revelation of God.
