It is with great gratitude to God, to our dear Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, and those Christian Scientists who have so lovingly and patiently helped me in the understanding of this wonderful truth, that I write this testimony.
I first came into Christian Science out of sheer curiosity, as two members of my family regularly attended the church services in Liverpool, England, and seemed to derive so much help from them that I thought I should like to go and see for myself what Christian Science was. From that time on I have been interested in it; but I did not begin really to study it until two years ago, though I had already received several healings.
One experience in particular stands out in my memory. In 1916, while teaching in a boys' school, I contracted tonsillitis together with a septic throat and kidney trouble. Owing to the fact that I was living in a boarding school, I had to submit to the examination of a doctor, with the result that he said I was in a very poor state physically. Although I begged to be sent home, I was kept in bed for nearly two weeks, being told I could not travel in that condition, as the doctor was under the impression that I had diphtheria. After a consultation with another doctor, it was agreed that I had tonsillitis. Again I begged to be sent home; and in a few days consent was given. Before I was allowed to leave, the doctor asked me for the name of my medical practitioner at home, saying he wished to put me in good hands as I would have to rest for at least three months. However, I told him I had no doctor at home, and the only person to whom I could refer him was my mother, who was a Christian Scientist. After I arrived home and applied for Christian Science treatment I did not have to spend one day in bed; and within five or six weeks I was again at my work, and have been ever since.
