We read in Deuteronomy, "We were Pharaoh's bondmen in Egypt; and the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand." I used to be in bondage to many a hard master, including delicate health, sorrow on account of the illness of a relative, and a sense of injustice. A copy of an old edition of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy had been in our home for years without being studied. I had been unable to find any sense in it because it was written in English. Though fond of the church in which I had been brought up, I took no active interest in it, and sought comfort chiefly in books and human sympathy. Not until the latter proved a broken reed, and health and strength seemed to be taken away, was the soil prepared for the good seed.

As I was lying in bed, weak and discouraged, I was driven to take up again the "little book" that had long remained unopened; and now its meaning was clear and beautiful! The fact that many had been healed by reading Science and Health was unknown to me then ; but I became absorbed in the inspired pages, and read the volume from beginning to end. A few days after I had begun, a heavenly joy came over me; and I was entirely healed. Not only had the acute ailments dropped away, but some conditions supposed to be chronic disappeared at the same time, and I could not remember ever having been so well.

Medicines prescribed by a kind physician were destroyed, and a copy of the latest edition of Science and Health was procured and diligently studied, although opposition had to be met at the start. So convincing had been the proof of God's love and power that I was compelled to follow where Truth led. Membership in The Mother Church and a branch society came in due time, for which I am very grateful; and then the way opened so that the great privilege of class instruction could be enjoyed.
