It was not for physical healing that I first began to study...
It was not for physical healing that I first began to study Christian Science, but to receive help with my work. Before knowing of Christian Science I had to take an examination, the first to three, in connection with my work. It was necessary to obtain a first-class diploma for all subjects. When the result of the first and easiest came out, my name was among the second-class students. I received no encouragement from the training school, either to continue with the work or to begin again; so for a while my studies were at a standstill.
During that time a friend told me that Christian Science would help me with my studies, so I began to read the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly daily. I had not been reading many weeks before I learned that God is Mind, all intelligence. I saw from this that since God is infinite intelligence, it was possible for me, as His image and likeness, to do successfully everything that was right and necessary for me to do in connection with my work. That was my first step in Christian Science. My next step was to prove that this was true. I went back to the training school and recommenced my studies. I found that my whole mental outlook had entirely altered, and the work which before had seemed hard and difficult Christian Science now made easy by showing me daily how to demonstrate intelligence. I was able to express ability, efficiency, and joyous activity in my work. I went straight ahead; and when the examinations came along, at different periods, I was quite prepared to do the work.
At the time I was taking the first two examinations I asked for Christian Science treatment; but for the third I did my own mental work. The result of all was a first-class diploma; and in the last examination the average of my marks was higher than those of the other students. Since that time Christian Science has been my only guide and help. I am grateful for class instruction; also for the privilege of teaching in a Christian Science Sunday School. This work has taught me to understand more of God than anything else I have done since coming into Christian Science. It has proved to me that we are all in God's school; for "they shall be all taught of God."
