[Written for the Sentinel]

Prayer at Twilight

'T is not for earthly things I pray,
My Father-Mother God, to Thee;
But that I may from day to day,
More righteous, more courageous be;

That to my brothers I may bring,
Assurance of Thy greater love,
Enabling them on lighter wing,
To turn and seek for good above;

That Thou wilt guard my onward tread,
Lest I forget humility;
Lest I should think of self, instead
Of trust in Thy tranquillity.

Oh, just to have more love for Thee!
More justice and more mercy give,
To feed my hunger lastingly,
That I, for Thee, may truly live.
