When I came to Christian Science several years ago it...
When I came to Christian Science several years ago it was for physical healing. I had been sick for years, and had tried different doctors and many different treatments. I had been in a sanitarium three times, spending in all about twenty months there, besides going back once or twice a week for treatment after I returned home. I always carried several bottles of medicine when I went anywhere. I was very nervous and full of fear. I could not go to church, as I could not sit still through a service. I could not ride on a train; and when I went out for a walk I would often try to avoid meeting people I knew, as I did not want to talk to them. I had taken so much medicine that, finally, whenever I had a bad nervous attack the doctor would give me a hypodermic of morphine.
At last I had nervous prostration and was in bed for several months, having two consultations of doctors during that time. Then I thought of Christian Science, as I did not know what else to try. A friend had suggested it to me a year and a half before, but I had thought very little about it. At the time when treatment was begun, I was taking from twenty-four to twenty-six doses of medicine a day. When I found I could do without the medicine, I was very glad. One of the first things to disappear was constipation, which I had had for years. Some time later I was taken with a serious illness, and I feel that Christian Science saved my life then. I was very rebellious when this illness came on me; but I learned, as Mrs. Eddy says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 574), that "the very circumstance, which your suffering sense deems wrathful and afflictive, Love can make an angel entertained unawares;" for while I had gained before, I found I gained more rapidly after that experience. It was not long before I could do my own housework and could go out and meet people. I gained in strength, and to-day weigh more than I ever did in my life.
I am very thankful to Mrs. Eddy for her wonderful book, Science and Health; and I am more grateful than I can express to God, divine Love, for leading me to Christian Science, and also for the spiritual insight I have received.
