On first coming into Christian Science I read the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. After several days of reading I noticed the first healing results, made manifest in relief from colds. From the start the reading and study were intensely interesting, although I had been a poor scholar and did not understand many of the larger words.
To go slightly into details, I had been examined by physicians and pronounced in the last stages of heart trouble and beyond medical help. Since boyhood I had traveled among the worst of associates, and in addition to the heart trouble I was a constant user of liquor and tobacco. I had reached such a mental state that nothing suited me. My memory was almost a blank, and nothing in the world meant anything to me.
But when I realized, after careful study of Science and Health, that Mrs. Eddy had found the divine Principle of all real being, I was a new man. When that truth dawned upon me, I could not find time enough to study Mrs. Eddy's writings; and I was healed. I have encountered many storms since, but they have all been overcome,—sometimes through my own efforts, sometimes with the loving help of practitioners,—and I am earnestly striving for a better understanding of that Mind "which was also in Christ Jesus." My heart is filled with gratitude to our dear Leader, Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science.
