No False Beliefs

Through the study of Christian Science we learn to apply the truths of divine Being to our daily problems; and according to the degree of our understanding of these truths do we demonstrate or prove the power of the Word,—God's Word,—which is law. Each day we find the need of clear understanding to meet and contradict the false claims which would attempt to govern us. Because of false laws and erroneous human training, we seem to be struggling against that which names itself sin, sickness, or sorrow. But God did not create any of these. Then, if they were not created, why do they seem real? Because we believe in them, and that they govern us.

Suppose there is a claim of sickness. As sickness is not a reality, then what cause suffering? Our false belief,—our believing in something that does not exist. Is the suffering due to the belief of lack, or the belief of inharmonious surroundings, or the belief of sin, or the belief of doubt or fear? Then the suffering is only in proportion to our belief in the reality and power of these false claims. We do not suffer from these in reality, for they do not exist in divine Mind; but we suffer because we believe that these conditions are real,—that they are a part of our existence.

On page 386 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy writes: "A blundering despatch, mistakenly announcing the death of a friend, occasions the same grief that the friend's real death would bring. You think that your anguish is occasioned by your loss. Another despatch, correcting the mistake, heals your grief, and you learn that your suffering was merely the result of your belief." So it is when so-called mortal mind sends its "blundering" despatches, saying we are sick, sinful, unemployed, lonely, discouraged,—we suffer in proportion to our acceptance of the message. But Christian Science is the correcting despatch, teaching us that anything unlike the qualities of Life and Love—health, purity, happiness—is not from God, does not exist, and so can be no part of man's being. As we solve each problem through greater love and consecration to God, good, we learn, as Mrs. Eddy tells us, that our suffering was merely the result of our belief.
