Gratefully and joyously do I bear testimony to the healings...

Gratefully and joyously do I bear testimony to the healings which my parents and I have experienced through Christian Science. We heard of Christian Science for the first time in 1906, when in Berlin. We became interested in its teaching, attended the Sunday services and Wednesday evening testimony meetings, subscribed to Der Herold der Christian Science, and purchased the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, which I was anxious to read. Not knowing the English language, I was obliged to acquire the letter and import of the textbook gradually with the help of English grammars and English-German dictionaries. After a few years I was able to translate at sight the quotations from the Quarterly Bible Lessons, and could read them fluently to my parents. This was an accomplishment which filled me with great joy; for I had suffered somewhat from lack of memory, and previous to 1906 a doctor has strictly forbidden me to learn a foreign language as it would be an overexertion. I do not suffer any more from lack of memory.

In 1907, I was taken ill with peritonitis and biliousness, but was healed in a short time through Christian Science treatment. I had suffered severely from these maladies some years before, when I was under medical care, and had to go through a long period of convalescence. I was also instantaneously healed of severe pains in the stomach and of headaches through the omnipotence of Truth. Through Christian Science treatment I have been healed of inflamed ankle joints, swellings, abscesses and wounds, erysipelas, gangrenous erysipelas, cough, and throat catarrh.

At the time of the rationing of food, when I was suffering from the inflammation of the ankle already mentioned, I had no appetite. Anything which I could have eaten—such as eggs, rolls, and milk—was not obtainable. While I was thus thinking my sad thoughts, a word "out of the mouth of God" suddenly came to me, which He had proclaimed through His present-day messenger, Mary Baker Eddy (Science and Health, p. 388): "The fact is, food does not affect the absolute Life of man, and this becomes self-evident, when we learn that God is our Life." This gave my thoughts a new direction and filled me with courage and inner strength. At the same time my appetite returned, and immediately I could eat what was in the house.
