Most of my younger life was spent in seeking material pleasure, and I always suffered under a feeling of depression when I was not being entertained. Later, I was placed in a position that made this constant seeking for pleasure in matter impossible. I suffered in the valley of despair, depression, and bitterness; and it was then that I was gently led to study Christian Science. Little by little I was drawn out of this life of self-pity and resentment through the study of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I have truly learned that matter can neither suffer nor enjoy. I have learned that real happiness is ever with us, in our own consciousness, as we understand the real man, as God made him.

I should also like to tell a few of the many healings I have had through the study and application of Christian Science. Two years ago I seemed to develop a nervous trouble. I would awaken often in the night breathing under great difficulty and with a fear of losing my breath altogether. Finally, after many nights of fear and difficult breathing, I had an opportunity to visit a Christian Science practitioner, who asked me what I did when I awoke with this difficulty. I told him I ran to the door for air. He lovingly explained to me that God's children already had everything that was needed to make them harmonious. He said the next time I awoke with this fear to lie perfectly still and know that man's every need was met. He gave me one treatment then and one absent treatment that evening. That night and for the next few nights I did awake with every material sign of the trouble, but did as I was told, and soon was sleeping restfully and naturally; and I was soon completely healed. I have never had a return of this illness.

At another time I began to suffer severely from ptomaine poisoning. My sister, who was likewise studying Christian Science, also fell ill. She read aloud for some time from Science and Health. She was healed of the poisoning almost immediately, but I awoke in the night nearly in convulsions. I did not lose consciousness, however; and as soon as I could talk, I repeated the "scientific statement of being," as given by Mrs. Eddy on page 468 of Science and Health, realizing the meaning of every line. I was instantly healed.
