I took up Christian Science for healing

I took up Christian Science for healing. I had no thought of the spiritual or religious part; all I wanted was to be healed, so that I could go to work. I had been unable to work for a number of years. My trouble was nervous prostration, but I never had used drugs, although I had depended on hygiene. The latter had apparently helped me for some years previous to this time, but now it was "found wanting."

Hearing of what Christian Science was doing, I decided to give it a trial; and after being under treatment by a practitioner one week; I went to work, mentally and physically, reading the Bible together with "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and other Christian Science literature, though before coming into Science I could not read a line without suffering for it, and did not dare to go anywhere by myself. It was not long before I could travel about all day buying goods, and doing it easily. Certainly I long ago discovered that the spiritual should be my aim. "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness," said Jesus. Holding thought toward the good and the true, I am able with God's help to overcome most of the false claims of mortal mind. Colds that used to be troublesome cannot now get a foothold. One evening I thought influenza was developing. About seven o'clock I went to bed, but not to sleep. I was working in Science till twelve o'clock; then I felt that it had been overcome, so I went to sleep. By noon the next day I was ready for my dinner, and ate heartily. That was the last of the difficulty.

I am a member of The Mother Church and also of a branch church, and am steadily gaining in spiritual understanding. I get much help from articles in the periodicals and from the Lesson-Sermons; and I consider them indispensable for our Christian Science work. I sold out my business some years ago, and took a trip of six months to California and the Far West alone. I am a Civil War veteran, and am in my eightieth year.
