Work

At the present time, when much is heard about business depression, lack of employment, and consequent beliefs of limitation, Christian Science is here to lift the unnecessary burden of fear and want by supplying mankind with the truth about work, and the understanding necessary to apply this truth to one's present experience.

When Jesus of Nazareth told the people of Jerusalem, nineteen centuries ago, "The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise," he revealed to all ages the true nature of work. He made clear the fact that the only real business there is, and that the one which man must be about, is the eternal business of reflection. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 470) our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, has repeated this thought in the following words: "Man is the expression of God's being. If there ever was a moment when man did not express the divine perfection, then there was a moment when man did not express God, and consequently a time when Deity was unexpressed—that is, without entity." Thus we see that God is man's only employer, ever supplying His infinite reflection with joyous and continuous work. Therefore man, expressing God,—Life, Truth, Love,—can know naught but abundance.

Man is the idea of divine Mind; and it is the work of this idea to reflect or express the Mind which is its divine Principle. Therefore, there is never an instant when man is inactive or without employment. Thus employment is in Mind, not matter; and in this true light it is easy to understand that materiality cannot change it or rob man of it. So-called material circumstances have nothing to do with man's reflection of God. Mrs. Eddy declares in Science and Health (p. 302), "It is impossible that man should lose aught that is real, when God is all and eternally his." Reasoning from this height of spiritual insight, attainable through an earnest study of the truths of Christian Science, it is recognized that real work is not unequal material exertion, but restful spiritual activity. The only result of one's working for and with God is harmony, happiness, and plenty. Because man is reflection, he cannot fail to render wholly satisfactory service to God; and this inevitable and perfect service has won, and will always win for him the eternal benediction, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."
