Over nine years ago Christian Science proved to me that God is the only Life of man. At that time I knew very little about it, but, through the loving influence of a Christian Science friend, had been induced to attend a few church services and lectures, although I did not then realize that I had any need of Christian Science.
Several weeks later we nearly lost our little son, then five days old, who was discovered to be in a dying condition through lack of nourishment,—a state of affairs which had not been realized by those in charge until he was too weak, as the physician thought, to be given any material food,—and there seemed to be no human agency which could save him. Then man's extremity proved to be God's opportunity. We turned to Christian Science for aid, and found divine Love ready to meet this human need. During the night which followed the discovery of the child's condition, Christian Science treatment was given; and in the morning he was much stronger, although no material nourishment had been found for him. The next day, means for his proper nourishment were obtained; and, with the continuance of Christian Science treatments for myself and the child, I was enabled, within a week's time, to nourish him abundantly myself, and continued doing so for eight months, while the infant developed at once into a strong, healthy baby, and is to-day a sturdy boy.
This proof of the efficacy of Christian Science healing turned my thought towards the study of the wonderful truth; and I am most grateful to God, and to our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, for the understanding which has come to me through the study of the Bible and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." Though I had turned away from medical treatment, the lesson of complete reliance on Truth had, however, to be learned; and the testing time came to me when this child was a little over two years old. He was suddenly stricken with a throat malady and suffered great pain. To my fearful thought, mortal mind suggested that a physical diagnosis would be necessary in order that the case might be properly handled; so a physician was first called, and his verdict of poisoning only increased my fear. After his departure a Christian Science practitioner was appealed to for help, and the work lovingly begun; but by evening the child's condition was more alarming to my anxious thought, and I again yielded to the temptation to doubt God's healing power and telephoned the physician to call, which he was unable just then to do. In distraction I called the Christian Science practitioner, and informed her of what I had done and the result. She lovingly but firmly told me that she could not work with a physician; but that I had every right to employ one if I preferred, and she would withdraw from the case. Then, for the first time, it was revealed to me that we "cannot serve God and mammon," and that I must choose between God and matter,—Christian Science and material methods and knowledge. My husband told me to make my own decision; and, after some agonizing moments, I came to the conclusion that we could trust God absolutely. Upon acquainting the practitioner with this decision she resumed the work; and peace and healing came. In half an hour the child's fever and pain abated, and he fell asleep. In three days he was completely healed.
