I was always a very strong believer in regular, moderate habits. I pursued a course of dieting, had abundance of fresh air and a regular system of sleeping, and believed this was performing the only duty within humanity's grasp for the maintenance of good health; and that through these requisites physical health would be maintained.
About sixteen years ago my health began to fail; and immediately I began a survey in order to ascertain the cause, hastily arriving at the conclusion that I also needed drugs to mingle with the above-mentioned health ideals. I was severely troubled with a number of physical disorders, such as indigestion, catarrh of the stomach, lumbago, kidney disorder, eczema (which a skin specialist was unable to remove), and chronic constipation. Also, I was often troubled with colds and sore throat. During this period of approximately eleven years I unwillingly but faithfully adhered to the use of drugs, ranging from simple home remedies to those of specialists. I was under treatment from several physicians. It seemed at times as if I was trying to consume the output of the drug shops! While in this weakened and nervous state of health, both mentally and physically, I became very much discouraged and troubled over my condition; and quite frequently some friends would call my attention to Christian Science and its unlimited healing possibilities. But through ignorance I usually gave them a very cool, indifferent, and disinterested reply, and passed the subject by. I was arranging to have a surgical operation performed, which the physician advised as the proper course to pursue; but was delaying this for some reason, probably fear.
One day, during 1917, while on the way to my place of business, I began to have hemorrhages of the kidneys. I had an examination, and the physician informed me that an internal blood vessels was ruptured. At his advice an X-ray examination was made; and I was informed nothing could be done. I was taken with pain and weakness; and there was an expression on my face that caused my people no little concern, although they knew nothing of what had occurred. They only thought that my general condition had become worse. The following afternoon, treatment was given me by a Christian Science practitioner who was treating my wife at the time, with the result that I was almost instantaneously healed, not only of the various physical disorders previously mentioned, but also of the last named disorder. This wonderful healing has furnished me proof of the reality and power of Truth, and that an understanding of God, together with faithful adherence to divine Principle, does produce these and even greater changes in mind and body. It is an incentive to me to know God better, and gain a clearer vision of man's true relationship to Him.
