My mother became interested in Christian Science when seventy years of age, and was so earnest that she induced me to try it. I had a goiter on my neck, which had been troubling me for three years. At night I was obliged to sleep sitting up in bed with pillows behind me, as lying down affected the heart. I was weak and filled with fear. I had been to several specialists in both Boston and New York, and each one said that "the kind" I had could never be cured.
Then I had a loving letter from my mother asking me to try Christian Science. She also inclosed the name of a practitioner in Boston, and said, "If you are not healed, you will be no worse." So I thought I would go to see the practitioner. After I had told her about my condition she seemed to me so indifferent that I felt as if she did not understand the seriousness of it. I told her this; and she said, "If, while you were talking, I have so firmly denied the error that you feel I did not believe it, you will recover." In three weeks I was entirely healed; and I was so grateful and relieved to be healed in such a short time. I was helped so much by the loving thoughts given me by the practitioner that they have remained with me and have blessed me. Then I followed my mother's example, and emptied out all the medicine I possessed, and burned the medical books I had so relied upon. Since then I have had better health than ever before. I often think of how filled with fear I was on being told by several physicians that I could not live two years; and this was nearly twenty years ago. So time has proved that the verse in Ecclesiastes is true, "I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever."
I am most grateful for all the writings of our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, and for her great gift to this age. I am very grateful for Christian Science.
