From an Address given by the Bishop of Kensington, at a Conference of the Clergy. Kensington, England

One of the effects of the searching time through which we have been passing has been the passionate craving for reality. With the crash of the overthrow of a system based on materialism, there has resulted a widespread desire to recover grasp upon the true standards of value. It has come to be realized that Life's values are to be measured in terms of what is spiritual, and not what is material....

It is plain from the gospels that Christ triumphantly met and overcame every form of evil from which men suffered. He cast out evils and healed all manner of sickness and disease, and in consequence his teaching was such as none ever taught. It was with authority which none could dispute. And not only so. He charged his followers to go forth in his name preaching his gospel to all the world, and promised that definite "signs" should follow them that believe....

The challenge which meets us to-day is to justify our claim to be true representatives of Christ and authoritative preachers of his gospel. And at once it is asked why the demonstration of the truth of our gospel is not with the same power as at first. Why do not we heal the sick in Christ's name as did the early church? It is to find an answer to that question that I ventured to suggest this conference to-day. And in my invitation I drew your attention to the challenge which the action of that body of Christians called Christian Scientists makes. It is to me indisputable that they do heal the sick both in body and mind. That notable miracles have been wrought by them we cannot deny.
