From the time I was a small boy until I was ten years...
From the time I was a small boy until I was ten years old I had been suffering from tuberculosis or, as it was then known, "hip disease." It was necessary for me to go to a hospital every six months. At different times the bone was so weak that it could be bent between the hip and the knee. This made it necessary for me to use a pair of crutches and wear a steel brace the entire length of my left limb.
We were then living in Chicago; and in 1894, when I was ten years old, Christian Science was brought to the attention of my mother, who had been given up by the doctors after being told she had cancer of the stomach and had only a few weeks to live. She was healed of this condition in a very few treatments and to-day is well and active. After this healing I was taken to a practitioner and in a very short time the diseased bone became sound. Before having Christian Science treatment my left limb was over an inch and a half shorter than the right one. The lengthening of the limb was slow but steady, and by the next year both of my limbs were of the same length. It was also said that if I ever did grow up—and the chances were small—I would have to take up an occupation that required no physical exertion. After being healed in Christian Science I developed a liking for mechanics and became engaged in business that required considerable physical endurance. Several years later and several times since, I have had to take a medical examination as a part of an application for employment and have stated my previous illness, but even with this statement the examiners were unable to find any existing conditions of the old trouble.
From that time to the present, nearly thirty years, Christian Science has been my only source of help, not only physically but in overcoming every other discordant condition that we meet in our daily life; and we daily are learning that it not only heals discordant conditions after they have obtained a hold on us but, more than that, it prevents and blots out many conditions from ever being manifested, and in that way keeps our consciousness filled with truth. This condition is best expressed by our dear Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 201), "The way to extract error from mortal mind is to pour in truth through flood-tides of Love." This wonderful truth is constantly enabling me to be a better citizen, a more loving and considerate neighbor, and more honest with myself.
