The Eagle

In your paper a preacher of your city is quoted as saying that he could not see how Christian Scientists could call themselves Christians, as they placed Mrs. Eddy above Christ. Neither can the writer of the article understand how any one believing that Mrs. Eddy was "above Christ" could call himself a Christian. For a Christian Scientist to think of or worship Mrs. Eddy as a second Christ, or as above Christ, would be considered in Christian Science as sacrilegious. In fact, the statement said to have been made by the reverend gentleman has been a stock criticism of the clerical critics of Christian Science for many years.

Christian Scientists understand such statements to convey the very antipode of the teaching of Christian Science. A fundamental teaching of Christian Science is that there is but one God and His Christ, inseparable; but one Jesus of Nazareth, who was the highest human demonstrator of the Christ. To Jesus of Nazareth there was revealed the full and complete understanding of the idea of God, the Christ. This understanding was the agency through which he healed the sinful, the sick, and overcame the "last enemy"—death.

In Christian Science, Christ is understood as inseparable from God. The Christ, the true reflection of God, revealed to Jesus man's sonship with God, and his dominion and power were understood because of this revealed relationship with God. The followers of Mrs. Eddy do not worship her. But for her, as the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, they have occasion for boundless gratitude. In the Manual of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, we read as follows (Art. VIII, Sect. 7): "In accordance with the Christian Science textbooks,—the Bible, and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures;—and in accord with all of Mrs. Eddy's teachings, members of this Church shall neither entertain a belief nor signify a belief in more than one Christ, even that Christ whereof the Scripture beareth testimony."
