An Enigma Solved

Almost without exception people are puzzled over the origin of evil until they take up the study of Christian Science. Perplexed by the scope of its seeming activity and the havoc it is apparently producing, they are apt to be dismayed at the power it seems to wield in the lives of men. Where did evil come from? what is its source? they ask.

Now, Christian Science speaks with no uncertain voice on the source of evil. It does not deny that evil appears to be real to humanity. Far from it. The Christian Scientist knows perfectly well what a hold the belief of evil claims to have on many, and how it is responsible for the sorrow and suffering of the world. But Christian Science has taught him to look upon evil in an entirely different way from that in which he had formerly viewed it. To him evil is no longer an enigma; its riddle has been solved. Evil no longer presents itself to him as something which can baffle him; for he has learned the utterly mythical nature of its suppositional origin.

From the point of view of the human so-called mind, what, then, is the origin of evil? On page 489 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," our revered Leader, Mrs. Eddy, states practically all that need be said on the point. There she writes, "The corporeal senses are the only source of evil or error," adding a few lines farther on, on the same page, one of those profound statements of truth with which the Christian Science textbook abounds: "Outside the material sense of things, all is harmony."
