[Written for the Sentinel]

"Be still, and know"

Beautiful bird, so care-free and joyous,
Up in the topmost bough—full-throated, glad,
God's humble messenger, type of true freedom
That lifts the weary, the sick, and the sad,

You do not fear when the heavy clouds gather,
You give out song though no sun seems to shine;
Oh, that we all might heed the sweet message,
Heaven-sent, through you a God-given sign!

God's guidance to some was a pillar of fire;
To another a bird the sweet promise unfolds.
The mountains, the valleys, meek streams, and great billows
All speak of His presence to him who beholds.

Then let us awake, and with thinking uplifted
In praise to our God, gain the uppermost height
Where sin is unknown, where His kingdom is congnized
And man is found clad in the armor of light!
