Many years ago I had a severe attack of pleurisy

Many years ago I had a severe attack of pleurisy. My doctor examined me, and the bacteriologist's report read: "Tuberculosis bacilli present in large numbers." This diagnosis only confirmed what I had believed for some time. The doctor expressed the greatest consideration and kindness toward me, and told me that medicine would not do me any good nor could any other physician do more for me than he was doing. He advised me to give up my position and to go to the country, which I did. He also advised me not to mention my trouble to any one and to think about it as little as possible. In the new environment I gained considerably in weight and strength, although I had bad spells at times, until three years later when I contracted a severe cold and went down rapidly. During this time Christian Science had been mentioned to me several times by different people, and at one time I had even gone so far as to call on a practitioner, whom I had met through a friend, and had a short conversation with her. She advised me to purchase "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and to read it. I thanked her without further comment and left, fully convinced that I was not foolish enough to spend my money for a book I had never seen and knew nothing about. I reasoned that if the healing were mental, it was not necessary for me to have the book in order to think. Medicine, physical culture, diet, climate, and a remedy supposed to be an infallible cure, had all failed to give me any permanent relief, so I decided to try will power—which resulted in practically the complete breakdown mentioned.

At this time a friend sent me some copies of the Christian Science Sentinel and Journal, some of which I read partly, principally the testimonies. A friend who had received help from Christian Science invited me to go to church one Sunday and I accepted the invitation. The services did not impress me particularly, but the testimonies that I had read and my talk with the practitioner some time previously had done their work. I had become convinced that I could be healed, and the question now was, Did I really want it? There seemed to be nothing worth while to live for. That night, however, I decided to ask for a treatment the following morning, which I did, and from that time my improvement began. Within a week I was able to resume my regular duties, and since that time have never lost an hour's time through any recurrence of the disease. The healing was slow but complete and permanent. I have also been healed of appendicitis, influenza, chilblains, rheumatism, and numerous other ailments.

Since first taking up the study of Christian Science, I have never used material remedies in any form. I feel deeply and sincerely grateful for the relief from physical disease, but my greatest gratitude is for the enlarged, brighter, and better sense of being. Christian Science, as revealed by Mrs. Eddy in Science and Health and in her various other writings, has been the means of making the Bible the "Book of Life" to me. I can now find in the Scriptures the law of life eternal, and understand how to apply and practice this law in the working out of my salvation as Jesus declared we should be able to do when he said, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also."—
