I can say with Christ Jesus, "Father, I thank thee that...
I can say with Christ Jesus, "Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me." I did not come into Christian Science for physical healing, neither did I know anything about it as a religion. I had been very unhappy, for my prayers were never answered. Fear and mental anguish were almost unbearable. I cried out to God to teach me how to pray, and then I thought of Christian Science, and I knew it was my answer. Previous to this, I had only heard Christian Science mentioned two or three times and thought it some foolish fad. So sure was I now that Christian Science was what I needed that I made every effort for weeks to find out something about it, and finally was led to a Christian Science reading room, where I purchased "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.
I shall never forget the glorious light that dawned upon me when I read that book. All fear was gone and I seemed to be in the kingdom of heaven, with nothing to do but rejoice and tell everybody else about it. I soon found, however, that this indiscriminate talking was not wise. Then came a time when I went through the wilderness. We had experienced great financial loss, and had moved from our old surroundings to a new part of the country where I was isolated from all other Christian Scientists and from church services. But the Christian Science periodicals always reached me, and they were like drink to the thirsty in a desert land. For these and for Mrs. Eddy's writings I am very grateful. I thought Christian Science might restore to us our fortune but I had to learn to love Truth for Truth's sake, and not only for the material benefits. "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you," was proved true in our case, and what seemed to be lost was replaced with something far better and with peace and happiness.
I wish also to express my gratitude for the sense of God's love and protecting power in an automobile accident a short time ago, when our car went over a steep embankment. Daily I am proving that "Love is the liberator" (Science and Health, p. 225). Being fond of animals and pets I can see this love and freedom manifested in them, and can realize the truth of Mrs. Eddy's words in Science and Health (p. 514): "All of God's creatures, moving in the harmony of Science, are harmless, useful, indestructible." My desire is to gain more of this understanding of God, as taught in Christian Science which meets every need.—
