The clergyman who attacked Christian Science in a recent issue, calling it a false philosophy and a lie, has unwittingly applied these offensive terms to the teaching of Christ Jesus. Mrs. Eddy discovered that Jesus' teaching is a demonstrable science, and properly called it Christian Science. There is nothing in Christian Science doctrine which is not based upon and logically drawn from Jesus' teaching and practice. That this is true is proved by its fruits in healing all manner of sickness and disease, the very proof Jesus demanded as evidence of discipleship. Christianity must be scientific for the very reason Mrs. Eddy gave in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," on page 342. "If Christianity is not scientific," she wrote, "and Science is not of God, then there is no invariable law, and truth becomes an accident."

When one teaching answers the test Christ Jesus gave and others do not, there is only one logical conclusion to be drawn therefrom, and this conclusion, through Mrs. Eddy's discovery, has elevated the practice of Christianity to-day above superstition and skepticism, and above mere preaching, to a practical science available in all human problems. In other words, it works out the salvation of mankind here and now as Jesus meant that it should.

The critic's supposition that sin, disease, and death are ignored in Christian Science as "figments of the imagination and hallucinations of the carnal mind" must be rather amusing to any Christian Scientists who has healed what were considered by physicians as serious and incurable diseases. Permit me to say that the healing is not done by such ignorance. Any one knows that, to the human consciousness, disease is no more a figment of the imagination than is a collision with a post, such as is recommended by the critic. To heal disease, however, by an understanding that God is the only creator, as the Bible teaches, and that He created nothing but what is spiritual, good, and eternal, is quite another matter, for it is based on scientific truth. It is a knowledge of this truth which Christ Jesus said would make mankind free, and it is the same truth which enabled him to detect in consciousness the latent sin which caused disease, and to heal it or cast it out. This truth cannot be learned by any number of collisions with a post.
