The blessings which have come into our lives through the...
The blessings which have come into our lives through the study of Christian Science are more than I can tell. About five years ago my son, a boy fourteen years old at that time, was taken ill and our family physician said he had a very high fever, the nature of which could not be determined for some days. After about a week the doctor told us that the fever would undoubtedly last three weeks. The boy continued to grow worse, so we decided to call another physician. A week later a council of doctors was held, and they decided that the boy had rheumatic fever. He was confined to his bed for ten weeks, and at last a specialist was called. After a thorough examination he told me that my son had valvular heart trouble and would always be an invalid. He warned me not to allow him to have anything to do with athletics, saying that he must not run or lift anything heavy and must go once every month to see his family physician; for if we failed to observe these instructions, we were taking the boy's life in our hands. With a heavy heart I went back to the sick room, trying hard to be cheerful as I did not want my son to know what the doctor had said.
A neighbor who was a Christian Scientist had lent me, at my request, a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. I had read a few chapters of the book and had become very much interested in it; so after the doctor had gone I went over to her house and told her what he had said. We talked for about half an hour and I came home feeling much comforted. I began at once to try to realize the perfection of man as created in God's image and likeness, and in a few days we decided to have Christian Science treatment. A practitioner was called in and after the first treatment our son was completely healed of the heart trouble. The rheumatic pains were slow in yielding, but we realize that there were many lessons to learn and much to overcome that would not have been accomplished had the healing come at once.
This is only one of the many blessings that have come to us. I have been healed of bronchitis, from which I had suffered for many years, by reading the textbook. I am deeply thankful to God, and grateful to Mrs. Eddy and to the kind friends who have assisted me on my pilgrimage. My prayer is that I may have a better understanding of God and of man as His image and likeness.
