In April, 1912, I completely broke down with nervous...

In April, 1912, I completely broke down with nervous prostration and a stomach trouble and was placed in a hospital for the insane. Twice I was taken home but had to go back again, and twice I attempted to end my life because I could see nothing to live for, material means of relief having failed. The last time I was removed to the hospital I decided to take things just as they came. I read the Bible constantly with perseverance and began to have a little more hope for myself. I had been thirsting after righteousness for thirty-five years and had been a member of a church all that time, but had never felt the need of the higher power so much before. In 1913 my son came for me and said he wanted me to go to the coast with some of my relatives and friends. At his request I promised not to try to harm myself in any way, and of my own accord I added that I did not expect to be a coward any longer, but was going to fight my battle on the plan of righteousness. I went to the coast and stayed some two or three weeks, when I returned with my sister to her home. I then took electrical treatments daily for a month but with no relief.

Soon after that a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy was lent to me. I began reading this book and in a very short time saw the nothingness of materiality. I then began to work a little. I soon had help from a Christian Science practitioner for several weeks. I grew stronger all the time, both mentally and physically, until 1916, when my business was so increased that I could not keep up the work and began to worry somewhat. Becoming too weak to carry on the work, I got a man to take charge of the shop for a week and went to a practitioner for treatment. At the end of the week I returned to my duties and have been growing stronger ever since. I am healed and doing hard work each day.

I had class instruction a year ago and have been able to help others. I feel very grateful, indeed, to Mrs. Eddy for her great work and many sacrifices. It makes me have more faith in and respect for our cause to know that the Publishing Society makes sure that all healing is genuine before testimonies are printed.
