What have I to be grateful for in Christian Science?...
What have I to be grateful for in Christian Science? I have but to ask myself the question and immediately an abundance of blessings spring up in thought, and because of my gratitude I wish to tell of a few.
I am finding Christian Science to be indeed, as the psalmist sang, "more to be desired ... than gold, yea, than much fine gold." My foremost blessing, that for which I am most grateful, is the spiritual uplift, the peace and security gained through the understanding which comes from the daily study of the Lesson-Sermons and other Christian Science literature. Christian Science meets our every need in the home and in business alike. It is always a very present help. I have been healed many times in the past ten years, and our three sons know no other than the one great Physician.
I would like to tell of an experience the oldest boy had in his school. It was reported by the physicians that there was an epidemic of smallpox in the schools and they decided to have every child in the public schools vaccinated or expelled from school. This was not supported by statute law, and as we had some knowledge of Christian Science and knew that it is able to prevent disease as well as to cure it, we applied for treatment and continued to send the child to school without complying with the demands of the physicians. One day when all the children but four or five had been vaccinated, the teacher stated that the physicians would be there the following morning to vaccinate the rest. The next morning our son, who was but eight years of age, cried and said he did not want to go to school, fearing they would compel him to receive their treatment. He was assured that they could do nothing more than send him home and that his safety could be proved as in the case of Daniel, who had seemed to come under a man-made law when he was cast into the den of lions but had come out unscratched. Also we told him how the three Hebrew children were cast into the fiery furnace but came out unharmed. We then called up the practitioner and asked for help and soon the little fellow went off happily. Instead of receiving vaccination, being expelled from school, or taking the disease, he was delivered entirely from the law of superstition, for nothing further was ever said to him about it, and in a short time he was promoted to the upper class. The demands of the physicians were repealed, and Christian Science children throughout the city were permitted to continue in school without further annoyance.
