True Unity

The demonstration of unity rests upon the recognition of one Mind governing the universe in absolute harmony, law, and order; in according to God all that belongs to Him who is able to maintain it in "beauty, grandeur, order," to quote the poet's words. Mortal mind would counterfeit this true unity by a spurious type of unity. It would first of all outline the process, method, ways, and means, which would lull it into the belief of unity,—an outward "Peace, peace; when there is no peace,"—thereby reversing the true course of procedure expressed by the Master when he said, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."

The mere fact of acting together, shouting together, coming together, is not necessarily a proof of unity; for if the outward manifestation be other than the outcome of an inward realization of unity, it is worthless. So-called unity may be based on fear, cowardice, or dishonesty. It may be the result of mental suggestion, or mesmerism, which finds an easy victim unless it is detected and destroyed by the recognition of the all-inclusive, all-embracing activity of Mind, God. Let us remember Jesus' words, "Ye cannot serve God and mammon," and then we shall willingly and humbly do our work in obedience to Principle, and so allow God to do His. Obviously the final result will be satisfactory if we heed the words on page 261 of Science and Health: "Hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good, and the true, and you will bring these into your experience proportionably to their occupancy of your thoughts."

A Christian Science practitioner would not attempt a physical diagnosis of disease and deduce therefrom the prospects as to the possibility of healing the patient; nor would the true Christian Scientist be led astray by what seemed a discordant condition of personal or church relations. The remedy in both cases is a denial of sense evidence and an affirmation of the truth—the spiritual fact. Unity is because God is, and any endeavor to evolve a form of unity apart from Principle would be equal to an attempt to heal without the underlying recognition of the perfection and harmony of God's creation. On page 207 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy says: "The spiritual reality is the scientific fact in all things. The spiritual fact, repeated in the action of man and the whole universe, is harmonious and is the ideal of Truth."
