Now that the Boston Herald and Journal has reviewed a book containing an attempt by a doctor of divinity to discredit Christian Science healing, I wish to offer a brief comment and a pertinent quotation from a clergyman whose attitude toward Christian Science is more intelligent.

The New Testament shows beyond question that the practice of the Christian religion includes healing the sick. Such commands as Matt. 10:5–10, compared with Matt. 28:16–20, Mark 16:14–18, John 14:12, are conclusive on this pint. The explanations for not complying with the command, "Heal the sick," offered since Christian healing ceased to be usually practiced by Christian ministers, have been palpable excuses. They do not tally with the Master's words or works.

The discovery and development of Christian Science presented an additional difficulty for the traditional excuses. Many different ministers have faced the new situation in many different ways. The author of the book in question has chosen to make a number of hateful remarks about Mrs. Eddy and to deny Christian Science healing entirely. But the reverend gentleman will not escape from his difficulty by that course. Incontestable proofs of Christian Science healing will accumulate against him day by day. Other people will accept these proofs whether he does or not. Quite possibly he himself will turn to Christian Science in an hour of great or extreme need. If so, he will find himself among a goodly company of grateful men who formerly spoke evil of Christian Science, but who now regard it as the divinely promised restoration and fulfillment of original Christianity.
