The speaker before the Butte Theosophical Society made...

Anaconda (Mont.) Standard

The speaker before the Butte Theosophical Society made a kindly reference to Christian Science. It is necessary, however, to point out the difference between Christian Science and mental science, mind-reading, and the like, which she mistakenly thought were similar. She was of the opinion that Christian Science, like mental science and mind-cure, is the influence of one human mind over another.

Christian Science recognizes but one Mind, and that one infinite and divine, and it regards this divine Mind as God. The term "divine Mind" is intended to express infinite good, the only power, presence, law, cause, and spiritual force which leads mankind away from imperfection to perfection. It holds, as Paul says, that "the carnal mind is enmity against God." For this reason it takes the position that the human or carnal mind is not a healer. Therefore from the standpoint of Christian Science the transference of thought, known as telepathy, is no benefit to the human race. If, however, all mankind expressed that consciousness known as divine Mind, then there would be unity of thought and action, and this would lead men heavenward.

Christian Science teaches that since the source of sickness is in the human mind, it must find a remedy outside of itself. A wholly ignorant mentality cannot teach another mentality equally as ignorant. In like manner the ills of one human mind cannot be cured by another human mind which believes in these ills as real. Only the truth about a lie can destroy a lie, whether it be a lie about sin or about sickness. The truth about God and man, and man's relationship to God, reveals man's perfection.
