One of the joys following obedience to divine Principle is found to be a state of thought prepared to meet greater demands on one's faith, capacity, and love, which after all resolve into greater proofs of God's care. An experience over a year ago marked plainly the value of being prepared to take the next step. A party of us were crossing the English Channel in the usual small ship. As I had never become convinced of being a wholly reliable sailor, the evidence of the turmoil of the sea that day insisted that I rise quickly above the fear of seasickness. The need of caring for a child and her governess (both of whom seemed to have succumbed to the disturbance) urged me to greater effort, and my faith rose to a higher understanding, for during this passage the tendency to seasickness was overcome.
Several months after this the same child and myself returned to the United States. This time I had the entire charge of her, and I knew we must depend more than ever on Principle and not on personality for protection, guidance, and strength. The sea was very rough, but on this occasion we were fully prepared, for we had held to the truth as best we knew how during the previous experience, and we remained free from seasickness, passing the time on shipboard normally. The illustration remains pertinent as to the value of taking the next step—of being keen and alert, dissipating through our understanding of God's unquestioned, unfailing presence and power the evidence of the limiting senses, whenever and however presented.
For many years I have had the great privilege of knowing Christian Science to be an ever-available and prompt aid in correcting the mistakes that may occur in our daily existence. In the healing of sickness and grief I have had many proofs of this. When physical weakness once seemed to be a necessary result of illness, the marvelous strength of Christian Science sustained me, and capacity greater than ever replaced the weakness.
