A number of years ago I became interested in Christian Science...

A number of years ago I became interested in Christian Science through the healing of a friend. I at once went with her to a practitioner's home to ask for treatment, as I had the same physical complaint, although it had never affected my health to any extent. I went rather to investigate something new. In four treatments the condition was overcome for the time; but it returned, as I was not ready to study and apply the little understanding I had gained. When I look back and see how disobedient I was in those days in not applying the truth, I see why my progress has been so slow and know that all that time I might have been as happy and free from fear and worry then as I have during the past few years.

My demonstrations have been over wrong mental conditions rather than over physical difficulties,—over fear and indecision; over a sense of worry and discouragement in my work in the schoolroom, which had become such a burden that it could not have been endured but for what I had learned through Christian Science. I should like to tell of one demonstration, every step of which was so clear that I could not doubt the ever-presence of the divine Mind. I needed a certain sum of money, and was saving toward it. One evening I remarked to my sister that I had enough for my purpose, when like a flash came the thought as to whether a certain bill had been paid. Investigation showed it had not, and so most of the money had to go for this purpose. I managed to save enough money again, but when school closed I did not see my way clear to live for two months without anything coming in; yet I trusted and would not hold a thought of borrowing.

Later in the same month, however, it seemed to me that unless some money came in the next few days I could not go on without borrowing, but that very afternoon I was notified that in a contest for the naming of a new subdivision in the adjoining suburb I had been awarded the second prize, fifty dollars in gold. This experience was told to some friends interested in Christian Science, and one of them called one day when I happened to be away from home. Before she left she put fifty dollars into my sister's hand, saying, "Take this to help you out." Of course we repaid the money to this friend as soon as we could, but her act, which indeed proved the worth of true friendship, was more appreciated than any offering of money could be, and we have never ceased to feel grateful.
