In the spring of 1907 I was first told of Christian Science and advised to read Science and Health. I at once felt it would be wonderful and beautiful to be healed by God, but while never doubting that others were healed, I was sure I was not good enough for God to help me.
In the early summer I was taken with a high fever; our family physician was called, and I was removed to the hospital, as I needed constant attention day and night. I took the medicine he prescribed and was under his entire charge, but the only thing that really quieted me in my ceaseless tossing was this line from the twenty-third psalm: "The Lord is my shepherd." After this illness I struggled along all summer, having terrible attacks with my stomach as well as other difficulties, and the suffering was intense at such times. Medicine had no effect whatever, and the physician said I might pass on during one of these attacks.
In the fall one of the friends who had told us of Christian Science, and who had been a physician, saw my need of this healing truth and gave me a copy of "Retrospection and Introspection" by Mrs. Eddy. Afterward I bought a copy of the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and began to read it. I did not expect physical healing, but felt that if there was anything in the book to help me to be better it was my privilege to have it. To test this new method of healing I left off taking medicine, and since then, the fall of 1907, have never taken any or felt the need of it, for Christian Science has solved every problem more quickly and efficaciously than any other means had ever done. Through the study of Science and Health, together with the Bible as it has been illumined through this book, becoming a veritable "Book of Life" to me, I have been healed of chronic stomach trouble, supposed to be hereditary, and of inflammation of the bladder, from which I suffered for at least ten years, often for months never having a free day.
