The letter from a clergyman in a recent issue makes it...
Clarkston (Wash.) Republic
The letter from a clergyman in a recent issue makes it quite plain that the minister does not think well of Christian Science. He is, of course, entitled to his own opinion about it, but when he announces in print that his hostility to it is based upon its supposed failure "to produce one single case of healing which will correspond with the work of Jesus and the disciples," he simply attempts to give the lie to overwhelming proof, which is gathering volume every day.
The Christian Science Journal, the Sentinel, and the Herold print a considerable number of verified testimonies of healing, proofs of which are available to an inquirer. In the Wednesday evening testimony meetings speakers give audible proof of the healing of sin and sickness of every kind. Any listener may learn by personal inquiry from the givers of the testimonies who they are and how the healing was wrought, and in each case he will learn that Christian Science does not heal by the human will, "the prince of the devils," but by "the finger of God," the understanding of the divine Mind. Senator Works delivered a speech in the United States Senate in which there were given fifty-seven proofs of the healing of thirty-six different diseases, all of which gave the names and addresses of the ones healed.
Our brother says that the "bottomless pit" is not a figure of speech used to denote nothingness and extinction, but that "the Bible says the bottomless pit is somewhere." Most of us have been long in this bottomless pit of torment and pain without knowing that we were in it, and some of us have learned from Christian Science that we are in it in belief only. Not stopping there, Christian Science has shown us how to abolish this belief, and how to displace it with the knowledge that God is indeed the only power. Having eradicated the belief that the pit is a physical entity, or place, we are free to cast down "imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God," and bring "into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ." This great boon is available to any one who will apply the teachings of Christian Science as revealed in the Bible and the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy.
