About twenty-one years ago my first baby was born, and when she was four weeks old I took a severe cold. For two weeks I was unconscious, apparently hovering between life and death. I finally rallied, and after a few weeks was able to attend to my household affairs, but was very nervous and suffered from severe headaches, which seemed at times unbearable. These attacks finally developed into what the physicians pronounced hystero-epilepsy, which as the years passed gradually grew worse. I tried many physicians and went through two or three serious operations, none of which effected a cure.
At this time I was in such a state of invalidism that I was obliged to have a companion with me constantly. One physician who was consulted prescribed an opiate in response to my request for something to relieve me, and I used it for two years whenever the attacks occurred. I then consulted a noted specialist on nerve diseases. Through him I gave up using the opiate, but was left with a very weak heart, which the physicians called a valvular lesion, and several times was given up to die. I was still suffering from the nervous attacks, which finally two well-known physicians pronounced epilepsy, and for which they stated there was no cure.
After a time my general health improved, but I continued to have these attacks, which left me very weak. All medicine had been given up except a stimulant when these spells came on; but I was very much discouraged and feared this illness would end in insanity, as each attack lasted longer than the previous one. About three years ago, just after a bad attack which had lasted three hours, a woman whose husband had been healed of a so-called incurable spinal disease begged my husband, with whom she was doing business, to have me try Christian Science; but he scoffed at it, as I would have done, and said it was the work of the devil. She did not, however, become angry, but reasoned with him; and after my husband talked it over with me, I decided to try Christian Science, although I had no faith that it would help me. I now know it is the work of God, as I have never since the first treatment had an attack of this trouble and am now a healthy woman.
