A sense of gratitude and joy induces me to testify that Christian Science has brought me a better understanding of God, and that through it I have been freed of much disease and suffering. Before I became acquainted with the teachings of Christian Science I was afflicted for over twelve years with a most distressing nervous pain, which manifested itself in various ways,—in the feet, arms, and other parts of the body. As time went on a very serious and supposedly incurable abdominal complaint set in, and although I followed all the prescriptions which the physicians believed might have a salutary effect, they proved of no avail. The troubles grew worse, and at last sleeplessness was added, which left me in a state of utter despair. However, God sent His light, and I was led to people who knew of Christian Science and drew my attention to it.
To hear that it is not God's will that human beings should suffer, and that He is "of purer eyes than to behold evil," meant deliverance and salvation to me. On the third day after this normal sleep returned, but the nervous conditions seemed to be intensified for five or six weeks. Then when I returned to my home and attended a Christian Science meeting for the first time, every ill and pain was taken away during that hour as if by an invisible hand. I did not ask a practitioner for help, but from then on I attended the services, read the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, the Bible, and the Herold, and after a year had elapsed all sense of an abdominal trouble was eliminated from my consciousness.
Gradually ailments disappeared which I formerly thought I would willingly bear if I were only freed of the more serious ones. A journey by either railway or steamer would invariably bring about a condition which necessitated my staying in bed, and even a short ride in a street-car or in the subway caused nausea. Of all this I have been completely freed through Christian Science. I used to have a weak memory, but this is no more the case, and I have been in good health and in a happy frame of mind for the past four years.
