The denunciation of what the critic erroneously thinks to...

The denunciation of what the critic erroneously thinks to be Christian Science includes an unjust, unwarranted, and unchristian attack upon Mrs. Eddy, a very noble woman, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. She has been acknowledged to be one of humanity's greatest benefactors by thinkers and men of wide experience who had no selfish interest to promote. At the time of her passing, a few years ago, newspapers and periodicals of all kinds were unanimous in their praise of her achievements and her wonderful character, and judging by the fruits of her labors, every word of commendation was fully carned, and more.

Christian Science is Christian because it is based on the teachings of Christ Jesus as set forth in the New Testament, and it has healed all manner of diseases as a sign following "them that believe." (See Mark xvi. 15-18.) There is nothing in the Bible that says, and no logical construction can be placed on the Master's words to indicate, that healing the sick was to be limited to his immediate hearers or to the apostles, or for any period of time. It is a well-known fact, on the other hand, that the disciples and the Christians during the first three centuries performed the healing works demanded by our great Teacher, and Christian Science has restored this healing as one of the fruits of the gospel.

It should be understood, however, that physical healing is not the primary object of Christian Science any more than it was of the mission of Christ Jesus; but the healing of sickness follows the destruction of sin,—the very proof by which the Master said we should know "them that believe." Christian Science has furnished indisputable proof that it is Christian by healing, through prayer and reliance upon the omnipotence and omnipresence of God, every disease to which flesh is heir, including cancer, tumor, tuberculosis, broken bones, and organic and functional diseases. It should be remembered also, that a large portion of these healings have been accomplished after material means of treating disease had been exhausted and failed. The earnest investigator need have no difficulty in securing proof of such healings, because it will be readily given by those of whom one would rightfully expect to get such information—Christian Scientists.
