There seems to be a general belief that Christian Science is unable to cure deafness, so I am sending my testimony as proof that this is untrue. When I was a small child I had catarrh very severely, and it settled in my ears every winter, causing me a great deal of pain. About fifteen years ago I had scarlet fever, and when I recovered I was unable to hear with my right ear. After that I was kept out of school most of each winter on account of severe pain in both ears, and was unable to play out of doors, as it was thought if I did I would take cold in my ears and head.
I had an operation for nasal growths, which the doctors claimed made me deaf, but this did not help me. About five years later I was again operated on for the same reason, and I will say that I have not had any trouble in breathing since the last operation, which was about eight years ago. The deafness, however, was not helped in the least. Two specialists told my mother there was no cure for me, as the ear-drum was ruptured.
I have been interested in Christian Science more or less for several years. In the spring of 1912 I seemed to have considerable trouble with my throat, and as I had decided to have Christian Science treatment for the deafness, I also asked help for this condition. About three days after the practitioner began to treat me, the throat trouble entirely disappeared, and one morning I remarked to my mother that I felt just like putting the receiver of the telephone to my right ear when I talked. She told me to do so, but I seemed to have quite a little fear, and did not. When she went out that evening she telephoned to me to use that ear. I did as she requested, and could hear with it for the first time in fifteen years. I was so glad I nearly cried for joy. From that time on I began to have a natural feeling in the ear and the glands on that side of my head. Within a week after the practitioner began treatment, my mother had an opportunity one day to whisper in my right ear. She was greatly surprised to have me answer her question, and then exclaimed, "You have heard me whisper for the first time in over fifteen years!" I have not had the least trouble with my ears since.
