The kindly spirit of your comment on the large attendance...

Puyallup (Wash.) Herald

The kindly spirit of your comment on the large attendance at a recent lecture on the subject of Christian Science is appreciated by Christian Scientists. It will also be a kindness on your part to give me space in your paper to correct a few unintentionally misleading statements regarding this religion.

Christian Science is the Science of Spirit, or God, and the word "spiritualism" has come to be used in such a finite sense that it is not applicable to Christian Science. Christian Science has in it no taint of materialism, and may therefore be properly called the gospel of idealism rather than the gospel of spiritualism as you have used the term.

Christian Science teaches that the material body is not the likeness, or "vesture" as you say, of the soul, but rather its counterfeit and unlikeness. On page 280 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy makes the statement, "Rightly understood, instead of possessing a sentient material form, man has a sensationless body." If God is what the Bible calls Him, — and He is, — Spirit and Love, then man as His likeness could not be material, for matter has never yet been found to manifest the attributes of Spirit and Love. The Christian Science practitioner's function is similar to that of a mathematician. When an engineer solves a difficult problem by the use of numbers, he has not created the numbers but only uses them; and numbers being mental, he could use them only by first understanding them. So the practitioner understands the great truth about God and man, the Christ in human consciousness, and through the realization of this truth sickness and sin go out of consciousness and disappear utterly.
