I came to Christian Science for the healing alone, for I...
I came to Christian Science for the healing alone, for I was a firm adherent of an orthodox church. I had met with an accident to one of my eyes, and although one of the best oculists in the state treated me, I did not receive the expected help. He conscientiously did all in his power to relieve me and could not understand why he failed. As a last resort I turned to Christian Science, but knew nothing about it except that Christian Scientists claimed people could be healed through its teachings. After a few months' treatment the difficulty was overcome. Since then I have been instantaneously healed of fever, acute bowel trouble, toothache, and the sting of wasps. The last was destroyed by realizing the truth of the "scientific statement of being" (Science and Health, p. 468). Since coming to Long Beach, a troublesome tooth has been removed, after treatment by a practitioner, without discomfort.
I have had many proofs this past year of God's loving care, and that He is an ever present help in time of trouble. One morning last winter I was almost overcome by gas. For a short time I felt somewhat weak, but as soon as the room was clear of the fumes, I went over the Lesson-Sermon and felt stronger. I was able to attend church, and by the close of the service was entirely free, and there were no after effects.
Last fall while in the ocean I unconsciously got beyond my depth. I do not swim, and as a far-out wave towered above me I was filled with terror, for I realized that I was powerless; but at that instant, which I thought was my last, came the quiet, calm assurance that God was with me. It was the "Peace, be still," to my frightened consciousness, and although I was knocked over and carried down and down beneath the wave, that thought never left me, and it dispelled all fear. It was the clearest realization of God's presence I have ever had. I was borne toward the shore, and when the wave had expended its strength I came to the surface. I had not even strangled or swallowed any water, for which I was thankful. I knew that the "everlasting arms" were indeed around me and had brought me into safety.
