The Lectures

Atty. Alexander I. Peckham, in introducing the Rev. William P. McKenzie, who lectured on Christian Science, said:—

Christian Science is probably as little understood and as much misrepresented as any of the great religious forces of our day. If this Science is teaching people to lead clean, correct, healthy, moral lives, and I firmly believe it is, then we should be thankful for its presence and welcome it here. If you and I know that Christian Science has healed the sick after all material remedies have failed and the physician has said there is no hope, or if we know where it has given joy for sorrow or hope for despair, or perhaps lifted a heavy burden from our brother or removed the cause of fear from some one, or again, freed some man from sin, then it should not matter to us whether this belief was discovered or rediscovered or born in this or some other generation. All these things are claimed to be done by Christian Scientists through their knowledge of God and man's true relation to Him; and this knowledge they do not wish to keep to themselves, but desire that you receive it,—and it is yours for the study. They do not claim to have some new or strange religion, but rather to have the simple truth which Jesus taught and demonstrated. They say: Pray aright, and demonstrate your prayers. Pray quietly, and let your life attest your sincerity,—live as you should. Their faith has stood the test of years, and now Christian Science desires to be judged only by its fruits.

I am not a Christian Scientist,—rather I should say, I am not a member of the Christian Science church. In my desire to know something of this religion which stands for optimism and which is so dear to its followers and loved by them, I, physically well, mentally sane, about sixteen months ago visited for the first time their church service. Since then I have regularly attended their service and have daily read with profit to myself their Lesson-Sermons. It has satisfied me spiritually as nothing else has.—Correspondence.
