I have felt for some time that I should tell what God has...
I have felt for some time that I should tell what God has done for me through Christian Science. Our home was formerly in Ohio. Our family then numbered five, and not one of us was equal to the duties of life. It seemed best for us to move to Texas, but just prior to going, we went to Philadelphia, Pa., to visit our relatives. My wife had a cousin who was a Christian Science practitioner, and she told us that if we would investigate Christian Science, there would be no need to go to Texas; but we did not heed what she said. On the first day of May, 1896, I was attempting to handle a vicious, unbroken horse, when he became unmanageable. As he sprang forward to run, in some way the rope caught my left wrist and I was hurled forward at a terrific rate. When I was extricated, I was to human sense in a very serious condition. My shoulder seemed to be dislocated, and I was bruised and bleeding from head to foot. Having been dragged by the horse, I felt I was torn internally. I was taken to the house and a doctor was summoned. He made frequent visits, but gave me no relief. I told him my shoulder was dislocated, but he did not even examine it. He was very kind, but seemed to think I was too far gone for help.
At this juncture a visitor came to our home and recommended Christian Science, of which we knew nothing except in a casual way ; but again it was proved that "man's extremity is God's opportunity." This lady recommended a practitioner eight hundred miles away. There was no telegraph or telephone service, so my wife described the case as best she could in writing, and asked for treatment. It required nearly four days for a letter to reach the practitioner, and the morning of the fourth day I shall never forget, for when she began treating me, I was thoroughly conscious of it. All the intense pain at once passed away, and I was healed. When I became free so suddenly, the attendants said mortification had set in and I would not be with them long. Instead, it was Christian Science, or "God with us." No one who knew me and knew what I had passed through, thought I would ever rise again. My healing was a case surgery in which human hands performed no part. I have not been confined to bed a day since I was healed. Moreover, joy, peace, and blessedness have come with the attendant mental healing or transformation, and words are futile to express my unbounded gratitude for the blessings of Christian Science.
