Six years ago I took up the study of the Bible in the light of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, with the earnest hope that what I knew it had done for others it might do for me. For nine years previous to that time I had scoffed at what I believed Christian Science to be, and I ridiculed its Leader and her adherents, though I did not know why I did so. A disposition to criticize everything and everybody led me to a lack of confidence in the religion of my God-fearing parents, because I could see that the message of Christianity was the overcoming of fear, and wherever I went fears were being expressed. So I was not led to accept such Christianity, though I earnestly longed for an understanding of what seemed a very mysteriously created world. My constant cry was, "O God, if there is any God, help me, if there is any help!"
A few years after my marriage, a friend whom I had never known to be well, and who I knew had been healed by Christian Science, came for a few weeks' stay at our home. Her daily life, upheld by her confidence in the goodness of God, as well as her entire freedom from fears of all kinds, appealed to me as a Christianity which I could accept. Under the guidance of a most patient practitioner and with a copy of the text-book, I found myself able to cast out my false beliefs about the message of Christian Science and our Leader; but it took many months to do this.
Since that time, one child has been born to us, under circumstances of such harmony that I could never cease to be grateful, even if other blessings had not been showered upon us by the ministrations of Truth. Our two older children were constantly under medical treatment of some sort, and were rarely in normal health. Our last two have reversed every material law about the too frequent diseases of infancy, and with the casting away of our "foreboding fears," as our beautiful hymn puts it, these children have not known any more discomfort in teething processes than in the growth of finger-nails.
