In January, 1913, I became acquainted with the teachings of Christian Science, and I herewith wish to make grateful acknowledgment of the benefits received. I had gone through times of great distress, sickness being my constant companion for a period of sixteen years. Moreover, my life was often made miserable by my surroundings. My trouble was said to be due to bloodlessness and catarrh of the stomach. I consulted various physicians, not one of whom was able to cure the trouble, and I also tried many other means; but the condition continued to grow worse. I suffered pain in my whole body, had very little sleep at night, and in addition became afflicted with a severe nervous trouble.
In my dismay I besought God to help me ; but my prayers seemed to remain unanswered, and the sense of weakness and the pain were increasing steadily. I could neither speak nor hear any one talk, and was almost unable to sleep. There would occasionally be some improvement, but I had given up all hope of ever being restored to health. Prayer was my only comfort, and at times it seemed as if peace were descending upon me.
A "nature cure" institution was highly recommended to me, and I was taken there, though with the utmost difficulty. After several weeks had elapsed, the violent attacks gradually became less frequent and finally ceased to occur. This gave me new courage, and I felt as if I must wait for something to come. The desire was awakened in me to be of use once more in the world and to make up somewhat for the time lost along all the lines which had been neglected. I seemed to see a light like a star of hope in the midst of darkness, but again and again I experienced the most bitter disappointments, and after a few months lapsed into such a condition that everybody said there was no help for me. Still my trust in God increased, and I would answer that with God nothing is impossible. I was determined to fight on, with God's help. I felt that I must get well, that I must live for the glory of God, and do good to my fellow beings.
